Engineers need to be problem solvers with plenty of creativity and imagination. With Sylvan's Engineering courses in Iowa, young engineers have a great opportunity to enhance these skills — and have fun while they do it! Kids love to work out what makes toys, gadgets and devices tick, so our sessions are tailored to explore and examine real mechanical and architectural challenges. Each week, your child will buddy up with a friend to learn important STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering and math) by building, testing and redesigning various structures and objects. After all, kids engage in learning a lot more when it happens to be fun and enjoyable too!

The Sylvan Experience

Your local Sylvan in Iowa makes learning personal with classes of no more than 12 students and a maximum student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1. We also blend a variety of collaborative activities with different self-guided tasks, helping kids stay motivated with a range of proven learning techniques.

It's Time to Get Hands-On

Getting hands-on with real-world engineering challenges is the best way to master the fundamentals. That's why our weekly sessions are based around designing and building LEGO® machines and K'NEX® structures. And it doesn't end with the building: students discover how to test their creations, redesign them using the principles they've learned, and take part in friendly competitions with classmates' constructions. In other words, the budding mechanic, engineer or architect in your life will always be fully supported, motivated and engaged at Sylvan — so don't be surprised when your son or daughter can't stop talking about bridges, race cars and other exciting hands-on projects!

Creativity is a defining feature of our Engineering courses in Iowa, which also include:

  • STEM-based learning: Now is the time for your child to start developing competencies that are increasingly important in the 21st century.
  • Hands as well as minds: We know when to integrate the latest app-based learning methods, but this program is all about getting hands-on.
  • Teamwork: Students work together to complete tasks and improve their personal communication skills.
  • Regular emails: We know you want to stay up to date with your child's progress, so we'll email you photos and summaries after each session — as well as a special look ahead to the next project.
